While I adore the richness of the mid 17th century, there is something fluffy and light about Moliere that made me push this interpretation into the mid-late 18th century. While the garments here reinforce the ideas of fullness and fluffed, the airiness of the 1700s felt more to the zeitgeist of the story.
Throughout the Wilbur translation I noted the emphasis on words like ‘rise’ and ‘air,’ which led me to think of pastries and breads. This, combined with the delicacy and pace of the language, carried me toward a central style to use as a point of aesthetic reference.
